Is your building winter-ready?

It’s July already! We’ve reached the second month of Summer, and now is the perfect time to be thinking about preparing your building ready for the winter. Is yours ready? We have put together some of the areas we recommend looking into to prevent unnecessary winter maintenance, and to keep your property well-maintained and protected!

Take Preventative Action

The harsh climate of the winter months can cause many problems for your property, whether this be from freezing and thawing, increased cracking or debris and residue buildup. This of course has an impact on the aesthetics of your building – take action in advance to ensure you don’t have to deal with these problems in a time where all we want to be doing is thinking about Christmas Day!

Check your Paintwork

It’s inevitable that the paintwork on your building’s exterior will start to show signs of wear. This can be due to general ageing or weather (sun exposure and rain), and results in visible deterioration and fading. If you want to maintain a professional image, it’s important that you monitor the condition of your building’s painwork, as damage can occur both above and underneath your cladding. We recommend checking the below:

Is your cladding peeling?

Is your cladding chalking?

Is your cladding cracking?

If any of the above is happening to your cladding, then this is likely to be damaging both the exterior and interior of your building. If you’re worried about this affecting your business and your aesthetic, you can read more about the below services by clicking on them:

Identify corrosion

Corrosion is one of the most common issues with building facades and cladding. Corrosion is the breakdown of metal sheeting, which when exposed to natural elements and weathering, causes the metal to peel back and deteriorate.

If corrosion is left untreated it causes weakness in the metal structure, and also doesn’t do any favours for the appearance of your property. Weakened structure allows moisture to lay on the cladding or coatings’ surface, and can enter buildings, thus leading to internal damage and deterioration of your cladding, or penetrate the coating, causing discoloration.

How do you spot corrosion developing? Check for cracks and rusting, and if your edging is peeling back. If you’re not sure, be sure to give us a call.

How can we help?

You can guarantee that the coating you require is included within our offering, that includes, corrosion resistant coatings, atmospheric exposure resistant coatings, immersion coatings, mechanical stress resistant coatings, thermal stress resistant coatings. All of our specialist coatings are provided as part of a service which includes the appropriate surface preparation, the application of the product and auxiliary quality control.

Cladding Anodising (the electrochemical process that transforms non-uniformed metal surfaces into a durable and corrosion-resistant anodic oxide finish) is also another service for corrosion protection, which is most popularly used on aluminium surfaces.

Our Metal staircases spraying service is also used for treating corrosion – in the case of a re-spray the staircase is completely rejuvenated, appearing almost new and equipped with an anti-corrosion coating to provide lasting protection for years to come.

Dirt Build-up

All seasons can be problematic for the build-up of dirt and residue – not just Winter! Dust can accumulate from heavy rain, wind, snow and ice – giving your building a weathered, sometimes dull appearance, completely different to your previous clean, polished facade/shop front.

We recommend assessing the dirt and grime on your property to see if it it beginning to cause any issues (i.e. has the moss started to attach itself and began eating into the surface?). Our cladding cleaning and industrial cleaning services can help rid of these issues, giving your property some sparkle back!

Gutters, Soffits & Joints

Can you spot any holes or cracks developing in your gutters, soffits or joints? Ageing and naturing weathering of your property can cause damage to these areas. Untreated, this can lead to leakage, drainage failures and inadequate moisture protection. This problem is particularly frequent in the Winter months, from increased freezing and thawing – causing cracking.
